Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th April 1972. Her grandmother raised her as a single child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of study and being an assistant to teachers she dropped out of college. A poet by trade, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. The two ended up working together as well as co-writing You Got Me. At a Roots performance, she declared her artist status. After that, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to learn about the performing arts during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
